About the Program

Does EPICC replace any other education programs?

It is not the intention of EPICC to replace any other programs.  We encourage all facilities and organizations to assess the EPICC program for themselves and see if it meets their needs.

We are proud that the EPICC programs fill a need in the area of emergency education and use adult learning principles to achieve their goal.  All of the methods used are based on evidence to be the best methods for knowledge translation for the practitioner.

Finding and Running Courses

How do I find a course?

Courses are provided across the country by various organizations – some affiliated with hospitals and others affiliated with educational institutions.

If you are wanting to setup your own organizations and develop a group of facilitators in your area, please also contact us through this website.

What Provinces have courses available?

Currently there are groups running courses in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and the four Maritime Provinces.  We are currently looking for interested groups in Saskatchewan and Manitoba to get instructor groups up and running.  If you are looking to get in contact with one of the established groups or to set up your own group, please contact us through the “Contact Us” tab on this website.

How do I run courses?

What do I need in my facility to host a course?

The exact requirements will be based on what the group requires who is coming to provide the course.  But the basics:

  • One room big enough to hold everyone (tables are acceptable not required)
  • One small breakout space per group of 5-6 students.  These will be for simulation practice.  It is best if they are in a hospital-room type of setting or sim lab but can be done anywhere in conference rooms, hotels or meeting rooms if required.
  • One mannikin for each small group
  • There will also be some other equipment requirements for props but these are usually easily gathered and are less complex to arrange than the rooms and dolls.

Who do I contact if I have questions about my course registration (registration, payment, cancellation)?

If you have a question about your course registration (registration, payment, cancellation, etc) please contact the course provider that you registered through.  We can not assist you through this website with those issues.  If you are unable to contact the course director, please contact courses@nena.ca for assistance.

When is EPICC-Trauma being released?

EPICC-Trauma will be available in September 2017.

When is EPICC-Pediatrics being released?

EPICC-Pediatrics has a tentative release date of Spring 2018

Pre-Course Preparation

Are there any pre-requisites?

There is no pre-requisite for attending EPICC-Foundations.

EPICC-Trauma requires current EPICC-Foundations certification as it is a compressed timeframe program.

What is the Pre-Course preparation?

There is a series of online modules that you must complete before attending each course.  Completion is mandatory before attending and presentation of the confirmation of online module completion will be required by the course director of the course you are attending.

Allow 4-8 hours to complete the modules for each course.  There is some content that is relevant to all courses and you will only need to complete this once.

Where are the online modules?

The online modules are on the EPICC On-line Learning Website at https://go.epicclearning.ca

Who do I contact if I am having problems with the online modules?

Please contact us through the “Contact Us” link on this website.  Before contacting us, please ensure that you are using the most current version of your web browser and have followed the instructions on the “Need Help?” link on the online learning platform.

Can I print the online content?

You can print whichever online content you wish; however, we encourage you to limit this to certain resources such as the assessment framework and evaluation matrix.  We make frequent updates to the online content and your printed material will be outdated shortly after printing.

How long do I get access to the online modules?

You will receive access to the online modules for two years from the date of your enrolment into the course.

As an added bonus, when you access the modules again in those two years, it will always show the most current version, research and posts.

In-Person Session

What do we do at the course?

The course is a mixture of simulation, small group and large group scenarios.  There are no didactic sessions, no PowerPoint and no long periods of sitting in chairs!

Student Evaluation

There's no exam?

You’re right…there’s no exam!  BUT…

Using the word “exam” synonymously with “evaluation” of a student is an incorrect action.

An exam is simply a tool to evaluate a learner’s knowledge.  Other examples of tools are evaluation of performance (graded scenario), peer review, individualized mentor feedback.

In assessing the best method of EVALUATING a student, we must look at what we are trying to achieve.  For clinical practice situations, evaluation of learning should be frequent, supportive, objective and documented.  Basically, being able to answer A, B, C or D correctly has not been shown to prove a practitioner is competent at the bedside. As well checklist scenario performance only evaluates that a student can memorize a checklist (and again, does not translate to bedside care).

So…EPICC does have an evaluation process.  Student evaluation in EPICC is not achieved through examination — it is instead through individualized learner/facilitator feedback and the development of an individualized learning plan.  The student leaves with an individual evaluation form and learning goals.

Program and Student Certification

Is there a certificate of completion?

Yes.  You will receive a certificate upon successful participation in the program.  This includes completing the online modules BEFORE attending and participating in the evaluation process at the course.

You certificate does not grant you any authority to perform any skills covered in the course (much like passing ACLS doesn’t authorize you to perform those skills).  Individual employers will decide what skills nurses can perform upon completion of the various EPICC Programs.

How long is the certificate good for?

The certificate expires three years from your course end date.

Do I get certified for any skills?

There are skills that are taught in various programs that would not be part of a general nurse’s scope of practice (as an example, initiation of an intraosseus infusion).  Whether individual employers decide to allow nurses to perform certain skills on patients is a decision that they make based on their own comfort, policies and need.

While attending EPICC does not permit the performing of any skills automatically, certain employers may consider attending the program as the educational component to a new skill within their staff’s skills complement.

Who has accredited the EPICC program?

The EPICC Program is the official education program of the National Emergency Nurses Association (NENA).  NENA is the Canadian Nurses Association recognized specialty organization for the practice of Emergency Nursing in Canada.

Additionally, the EPICC-Foundations program has been accredited by the University of Sherbrooke for 19 Certified Education Hours for the nurses of Quebec.  The process for certification involves a complete review of the program by the Faculty within the continuing education area of the University and is re-certified annually after review.

The EPICC-Trauma and Pediatrics programs will be submitted to appropriate professional organizations for their endorsement upon completion.
